JSE-listed real estate investment trust (Reit) Growthpoint has launched the new R26-million Sandton Drive Link Bridge as part of a larger effort to enhance safety, accessibility and walkability for pedestrians moving through the busy intersection.

The bridge, which took 18 years to complete from its initial conception in 2007, spans 106 m and provides a direct pedestrian route over Sandton drive between Growthpoint’s The Place office building, at 1 Sandton drive, and the Sandton City shopping centre.

“This bridge is significant in many ways in that it really is a symbol of connection; it's a symbol of tenacity; of being able to hang in there and being determined,” said Growthpoint South Africa CEO Estienne de Klerk during the opening on December 10.

The structure is made of stainless steel with cement flooring.

De Klerk highlighted the company’s partnership with Liberty Holdings and Pareto, the co-owners of Sandton City, in establishing the project.

“We wanted to ensure our staff and our people can safely cross this road . . . it speaks to, collectively, the property owners in this area having a sense of trying to provide an environment which is safe and functional and efficient for the people to get across and to interact between the different assets,” said De Klerk.

“For Sandton this is a momentous opportunity, having this bridge. It connects the one side of Sandton to the other, and it creates a safe environment,” he added.

The Link Bridge will be open to the public from Sandton City during the day, with limited controlled access at night.

“From a position perspective, really it was the optimal place to put it for servicing this building, as well as the [US] embassy, and the shopping centre next door,” De Klerk told Engineering News during the opening.
